Bhattacharya's banking career began in 1994 when she joined the State Bank of India (SBI) as a banker, rather than continuing her career in the IAS. Bhattacharya completed her schooling from St. Mary's School in Kolkata and graduated with a degree in English Literature from Presidency College, Kolkata. She later earned a Master's degree in English Literature from Jadavpur University. In 1982, she joined the Indian Civil Service (ICS), which later became the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). After retiring from SBI in 2017, Bhattacharya has
