"I'm not asking for opinions," Cole said. He looked at the youngest of them, Private Delgado—nineteen, scared, but steady under fire so far. "Delgado. You still got that smoke?"
"Harris. Take point. We move in sixty seconds."
"And us?" Harris asked.
Corporal Harris crawled forward on his belly, carbine scraping wet wood. He pulled out a small mirror—shaving mirror, stolen from a farmhouse—and angled it under the railing.
"We go through the smoke. Right into their throat."
The bridge groaned beneath them, its iron bones twisted from a mortar strike three days ago. Rain sheeted down, turning the mud on the planks to grease. Russo spit over the side
He thought of home. A front porch in Virginia. His daughter's bike left in the driveway.
Silence. The river gurgled.
