Layla swallowed. "That's... that's the path to the Isu's lost library. No one's ever unlocked it."

"Eivor," Basim's voice echoed, layered with a metallic harmony. "Or should I call you the anomaly ? You carry Odin's DNA, but you refused his destiny. You chose the axe over the staff. Now, the simulation is rebelling. It wants a hero who bends . I am here to debug you."

"I can't stabilize it!" Layla yelled. "You're in the bleeding edge of the simulation. One wrong move and your mind scatters across the server."

"Your 'Animus' is a cage," Eivor snarled, leaping from the plinth. She landed in a crouch, the Hidden Blade extending. "Where is my clan? My brother?"

Layha's fingers flew across her tablet. A map of England appeared, but it was wrong—cities of glass and steel rose alongside longhouses. A glitched hybrid timeline. Layla swallowed

"Because," Eivor said, stepping into his guard, "a wolf doesn't bite with a borrowed fang."

Basim lunged, his bracer forming a blade of pure null-light. He was faster than any human, predicting her moves before she made them. He was the perfect AI warrior.

The plinth glowed blue. A doorway opened—not to Norway, not to England, but to a new, undiscovered strand of the simulation. A river of stars. No one's ever unlocked it

"You're not supposed to be conscious," Layla said, her voice tight. "The Animus is glitching. Badly. Someone inserted a corrupted fork of your saga into the Gray."

Basim paused, his fractal eyes flickering. "Error. Query: Why disarm?"

"No—" he hissed, his voice fracturing into a thousand forgotten voices. "I am the correction —"

She drove his own blade into his core.
