In January 1979, the U.S.-backed Shah of Iran was overthrown by Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamic Revolution. The Shah, terminally ill with cancer, was allowed into the U.S. for treatment in October. This enraged Iranian revolutionaries, who feared another U.S.-backed coup (like the 1953 overthrow of Mossadegh). On November 4, 1979, around 500 student militants stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 66 Americans hostage.
