Days passed. She stopped trying to remove it. She told herself this was better. The mask was power. The mask was freedom. At night, she dreamed of gold filigree growing into her nerves like roots.

On the fifteenth day, a second package arrived. Same brown paper. Same frayed twine.

She pulled harder. The skin around the edges reddened, then bruised. She stopped when she felt something shift beneath—not bone, not flesh, but something older. Something that had been waiting.
